Alexander Hochman, M.A.
Alex Hochman works with two different types of people in his career
consulting practice. First is the person who has been looking for work
for a while yet has not been successful in landing many interviews or
making helpful contacts. Perhaps this person feels as though they have
“burnt out” their networks and has no one new to tell their
story to. Maybe this person has spent too much time on the internet looking
for work and not enough time meeting people face-to-face. In this type
of situation, Alex helps the client in re-energizing their job search
efforts by creatively brainstorming new networking avenues, revamping
tired resumes and cover letters, and planning strategies for the client
to get out the door and meet the right contacts for their desired career.
The second type of person that Alex works with typically is currently
employed but beginning to feel that there is a better career out there
for them. This person may dislike their current work situation but has
no idea what type of work they would enjoy doing. Perhaps this person
spends time thinking about a “dream job” but can’t figure
out how to make a transition from one career to another. Alex helps these
clients by use of career assessments such as the Myers Briggs and the
Campbell Skills and Interests Inventory. He works to smooth out the issues
that may keep one from changing careers such as money, comfort levels,
and perhaps most common, fear.
Formerly a Sales Analyst at Montgomery Securities and Robertson Stephens,
Alex holds an M.A. in Career Development from John F. Kennedy University,
and a B.A. in Communication from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
He currently serves on the boards of the California Career Development
Association, the Gellert Family Business Center at the University of San
Francisco, and Lick Wilmerding High School. Alex is also a permanent panelist
on the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s Job Forum.
Alex presents both locally and nationally at business and career development
events and was a featured presenter at both the 2003 National Career Development
Association conference in Denver and the 2003 International Career Development
Conference in Oakland. His research on dual career couples was recently
featured in the career column of the San Jose Mercury News. When not working,
Alex enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters, attending
Giants games, and combing the streets of San Francisco for hidden ethnic
restaurants.
